Project Description

CENTERS FOR WHOLISTIC TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT

CFI- LA MERCED SUR

This center is located in La Merced Sur, an impoverished neighborhood in the city of La Paz. Most Families who live in this area face serious challenges, including poverty, crime, unemployment and health issues caused by malnutrition and contaminated water. There is no sewage infrastructure in this community. Another big problem is the low success for educational attainment among students. A high percentage of them perform poorly in primary and secondary schools as compared to students in a higher income status that live in other sectors of the city. Therefore, the result is a high percentage of school dropouts by the 6th grade.

Educatodos Program: It is an alternative distance-learning program where students attend classes once a week. It is endorsed by the Honduran government and targets kids that are unable to continue studying after 6thgrade, mainly for lack of finances. We provide computer literacy at both CFI centers. The use of technology also help to enrich and expand their English class that is part of the Educatodos curriculum.

Apprenticeship Training:

  • The goal is to facilitate learning through various processes. Beside computer skills, our goal is to integrate an extra curriculum class to the Educatodos program and connect our students to skilled crafts persons or businesses  to have on-the-job training.
  • In the city of La Paz, we also have the collaboration of INFOP(Instituto National de Formacion Profesional) with several of its Talleres Populares Initiative:  The Popular Workshops are an open and flexible training model, basically practical, learning by doing; attends with a short-term training, through an individualized teaching where the participant advances at his own pace. The TP is established in neighborhoods or neighborhoods identified as a zone of social risk or high incidence of violence.   (infop.hn)

Community Service:  Facilitate small projects/initiatives where students can participate in giving back to their community. The objective of this program is to instill a sense of responsibility and service for these young people that participate in our programs.

Tutoring Program: By 2019 The center will incorporate tutoring to support student achievement in the classroom, and help students meet proficiencies required. The focus will be on the cornerstone subjects of math, reading and writing for seventh, eighth and ninth graders who attend classes in several middle public schools of the city of La Paz. These students are not part of CFI’s “Educatodos” program, but they live in La Merced Sur community. We are confident that those who participate in the tutoring program will improve their academic achievement

Computer classes:  Youth and adults in the community will have the opportunity to learn basic skills on how to use a computer and the internet. It will also include learning software programs for more advanced participants.

Outreach Through Sports:   These are activities designed to promote not only exercise for our students, but also to develop their character through Biblical reflections that are given before they play and through caring relationships with these teenagers. In addition, we want to instill teamwork, respect and leadership, all while having fun.
